My children's perfect first pet

We got a Syrian hamster for our 10-year-old and it was an excellent choice. Old enough to handle gently, the hamster is big enough to hold without being as delicate as dwarf varieties. Our daughter learned responsibility, empathy, and patience through caring for him. He lived 2 years and 8 months and was healthy throughout. The whole experience was genuinely educational and joyful.
