I spent three months trying every version of Ashak I could find locally. The variation in quality is extraordinary. The best version handled dried sour grapes kishmish with genuine knowledge and the hearty and rice-forward result was noticeably superior.

Afghan hospitality tradition demands feeding guests regardless of the host's circumstances. The winning restaurant had the right an Eid celebration feast feel — unpretentious and focused on the food. qymaq cream tea was suggested correctly. Worth the search. When Ashak is made properly it's a completely different experience.
