First time trying Bak Kut Teh — completely converted
I had never tried Bak Kut Teh before this visit and I wasn't sure what to expect. The deeply umami from prawn paste taste hit immediately and made sense of the dish in a way descriptions never quite do. coconut milk is an ingredient I'd not encountered used quite like this before.
The a kopitiam coffee shop setting added something to the experience — this kind of food makes sense in that environment. the cuisine blends Malay, Chinese, Indian, and Peranakan traditions in a unique fusion. My server recommended Tiger beer alongside and it was exactly right. I've been telling everyone to try Bak Kut Teh. Outstanding first encounter.
