Finding the best Bobotie in the city — a personal search
I spent three months trying every version of Bobotie I could find locally. The variation in quality is extraordinary. The best version handled Mrs Ball's chutney with genuine knowledge and the smoky and braaied result was noticeably superior.
Cape Malay cuisine reflects the heritage of enslaved people brought from Southeast Asia. The winning restaurant had the right a shebeen township tavern feel — unpretentious and focused on the food. rooibos tea was suggested correctly. Worth the search. When Bobotie is made properly it's a completely different experience.
