Cultural discovery through Chakalaka
Chakalaka opened a door into a cuisine I'd previously known almost nothing about. The smoky and braaied flavours are unlike anything in my usual rotation and I mean that positively. Cape Malay cuisine reflects the heritage of enslaved people brought from Southeast Asia. Understanding that context made the dish taste different — richer with meaning.
I learned that Mrs Ball's chutney is central to this cuisine's character, not just a seasoning. The a Cape Malay restaurant in Cape Town setting was authentic and helpful for understanding what I was eating. Castle Lager completed the picture. A genuinely educational meal.
