Honest verdict on Cao Lau — good but not exceptional

Cao Lau here was solidly made — subtly sweet and spiced without anything to complain about. fish sauce was present and handled reasonably. But something was missing from the depth that this dish should have.

fresh herbs added at the table are a defining characteristic. The a Hanoi pho stall at breakfast atmosphere was pleasant enough. fresh sugarcane juice was available and a good suggestion. For a reliable version of Cao Lau this works. For an exceptional one, I'd keep looking. Three stars.
