Honest review: Chinese Elm Bonsai is rewarding but root bound decline from leaving in the same pot too long is real
Chinese Elm Bonsai is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: root bound decline from leaving in the same pot too long. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, deeply personal relationship between artist and tree makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a bright indoor shelf for tropical species only which suits it well. Learning about watering daily in summer as bonsai pots dry out fast has been essential. autumn colour on deciduous species before leaf fall is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
