Someone gave me Japanese Maple Bonsai as a birthday gift and I barely knew what it was. Two years later it's my most treasured plant and I've spent more time researching it than I'd care to admit.

The key discovery was repotting every two to three years with root pruning — once that clicked, the plant transformed. miniaturisation of full-grown tree characteristics is what gets mentioned every time anyone visits. I keep it in a seasonal rotation on display when looking its best which works perfectly. autumn colour on deciduous species before leaf fall is when I understand why this plant has such devoted followers. drying out and death from missing a day's watering in summer is the one ongoing challenge but it's worth the effort.
