Honest review: Japanese Maple Bonsai is rewarding but drying out and death from missing a day's watering in summer is real
Japanese Maple Bonsai is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: drying out and death from missing a day's watering in summer. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, seasonal change including blossom, foliage colour, and bare winter silhouette makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a dedicated display stand at eye level for appreciation which suits it well. Learning about wiring branches during the growing season while wood is flexible has been essential. autumn colour on deciduous species before leaf fall is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
