Started Japanese Maple Bonsai at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted Japanese Maple Bonsai at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. over-wiring causing wire bite scarring on branches didn't help matters. Once I understood repotting every two to three years with root pruning things improved substantially.
deeply personal relationship between artist and tree is what makes this plant worth persisting with. In a Japanese-inspired garden display with gravel and stone it finally looks as good as I'd imagined. vigorous growing season requiring wiring and pinching redeemed the whole effort. If you're starting out: do your timing research before you plant.
