I nearly gave up on Crocus after three months of mediocre results. Then I focused properly on planting at three times the depth of the bulb and within a few weeks the difference was dramatic.

It now lives in a mixed border with later-emerging perennials to hide dying foliage and has genuinely transformed that spot. increasing clump size year on year when well established is even more impressive in person than I expected from photos. summer bulbs like gladiolus and allium extending the season was spectacular — worth every bit of patience. If you're struggling with yours, planting at three times the depth of the bulb is almost certainly the issue.
