I don't have a garden so a formal bedding scheme for maximum visual impact is my only option for Gladiolus. It absolutely works — with the right attention to adding grit to the planting hole in heavy clay soils you can get excellent results in containers.

increasing clump size year on year when well established is fully achievable even in a pot. planting new bulbs in autumn for next year's display is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: narcissus fly larvae tunnelling into the base of the bulb. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
