Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Hyacinth

People describe Hyacinth as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. leaving foliage to die back naturally after flowering needs consistent attention and blindness with no flowers produced from weak or immature bulbs can undermine progress quickly if ignored.

Where Hyacinth is genuinely underrated is the beauty. remarkable energy stored underground for a reliable annual performance is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a formal bedding scheme for maximum visual impact and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. earliest crocuses and snowdrops emerging in late winter is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
