I'd had Barrel Cactus for about eight months with acceptable but unremarkable results. Then I started really paying attention to protecting from frost below -5°C even for hardy varieties and the difference over the next two months was dramatic.

architectural sculptural form that needs no flowers to impress became much more pronounced. The plant in a dry garden rockery or gravel bed now looks like a completely different specimen. flowering in late spring to early summer confirmed that I'd finally unlocked what this plant can do. slow growth frustration for impatient growers has been less of a problem since I got the overall conditions right. If your Barrel Cactus is underwhelming, look at protecting from frost below -5°C even for hardy varieties first.
