The first few months with Golden Barrel were underwhelming. Almost no visible growth and I questioned my decision repeatedly. Then something shifted — I think getting protecting from frost below -5°C even for hardy varieties right was the turning point.

architectural sculptural form that needs no flowers to impress became apparent once the plant found its stride, and it's genuinely impressive. Displayed in an outdoor container brought in for winter it gets the attention it deserves. complete dormancy in winter with no watering was the moment it stopped being a project and became a pleasure. One thing to keep on top of: scarring from cold water splash on the skin. Everything else takes care of itself once the basics are solid.
