Gift that became an obsession — Organ Pipe Cactus

Someone gave me Organ Pipe Cactus as a birthday gift and I barely knew what it was. Two years later it's my most treasured plant and I've spent more time researching it than I'd care to admit.

The key discovery was watering sparingly and only in the active growing season — once that clicked, the plant transformed. extremely long-lived with minimal intervention is what gets mentioned every time anyone visits. I keep it in a dry garden rockery or gravel bed which works perfectly. flowering in late spring to early summer is when I understand why this plant has such devoted followers. root rot from any waterlogging in winter is the one ongoing challenge but it's worth the effort.
