Honest review: Bird's Nest Fern is rewarding but crown death from frost on tender varieties is real
Bird's Nest Fern is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: crown death from frost on tender varieties. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, prehistoric elegance with delicate layered fronds makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a humid conservatory in a decorative pot which suits it well. Learning about maintaining consistent moisture without waterlogging has been essential. spectacular new crozier unfurling in spring is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
