Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Ostrich Fern

People describe Ostrich Fern as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. misting the fronds in dry centrally heated rooms needs consistent attention and scale insects on the undersides of fronds can undermine progress quickly if ignored.

Where Ostrich Fern is genuinely underrated is the beauty. exceptional ability to thrive in deep shade is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a fern wall or vertical garden in a shaded courtyard and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. frond dieback in winter for deciduous species is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
