I nearly gave up on Sword Fern after three months of mediocre results. Then I focused properly on removing dead fronds cleanly at the base in spring and within a few weeks the difference was dramatic.

It now lives in a fern wall or vertical garden in a shaded courtyard and has genuinely transformed that spot. wide range from compact table plants to large architectural specimens is even more impressive in person than I expected from photos. early emergence from the soil before most other plants in spring was spectacular — worth every bit of patience. If you're struggling with yours, removing dead fronds cleanly at the base in spring is almost certainly the issue.
