Started Plum Tree at the wrong time — lessons learned
I planted Plum Tree at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. codling moth larvae in fruit at harvest didn't help matters. Once I understood formative pruning in the first three years to build good structure things improved substantially.
long productive lifespan of decades with good management is what makes this plant worth persisting with. In an orchard with mixed varieties for cross-pollination it finally looks as good as I'd imagined. fruitlet setting and development through summer redeemed the whole effort. If you're starting out: do your timing research before you plant.
