Struggling with Pygmy Date Palm — would appreciate advice

I want to be honest: I'm not getting great results with Pygmy Date Palm and I'm not entirely sure why. crown damage and death in severe or prolonged frost has been a recurring problem despite my attempts to address it. I've been focusing on planting in free-draining soil to prevent crown rot based on everything I've read.

remarkable toughness once properly established is there in glimpses, which tells me the plant has potential in my conditions. I have it in a sheltered sunny courtyard or walled garden which might not be ideal. cold weather protection needed in winter for tender varieties showed some improvement. Two stars for now — not the plant's fault, but not a success yet. I'll update if things improve.
