I don't have a garden so a large container for a terrace or courtyard is my only option for Holly. It absolutely works — with the right attention to pruning at the right time of year for the specific species you can get excellent results in containers.

generally low maintenance once established is fully achievable even in a pot. winter bark and evergreen foliage interest is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: failure to flower when pruned at the wrong time. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
