I don't have a garden so a large container for a terrace or courtyard is my only option for Rose of Sharon. It absolutely works — with the right attention to pruning at the right time of year for the specific species you can get excellent results in containers.

multi-season interest from flowers, berries, bark, and autumn colour is fully achievable even in a pot. summer flowering on the current season's growth is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: failure to flower when pruned at the wrong time. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
