As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Crepe Myrtle. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to watering deeply and regularly in the first two growing seasons.

I grow mine in a specimen on a lawn as a traditional statement tree which is working really well. significant impact on the microclimate and character of a garden was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. autumn colour and fruit or berry display has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring verticillium wilt causing branch dieback on susceptible species, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
