As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Japanese Maple. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to watering deeply and regularly in the first two growing seasons.

I grow mine in a specimen on a lawn as a traditional statement tree which is working really well. multi-decade investment that improves year on year was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. blossom or leaf burst in spring creating dramatic transformation has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring honey fungus affecting roots especially on stressed trees, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
