I nearly gave up on Japanese Maple after three months of mediocre results. Then I focused properly on formative pruning in the first five years to build a clear leader and within a few weeks the difference was dramatic.

It now lives in a boundary or avenue planting in a larger space and has genuinely transformed that spot. multi-decade investment that improves year on year is even more impressive in person than I expected from photos. autumn colour and fruit or berry display was spectacular — worth every bit of patience. If you're struggling with yours, formative pruning in the first five years to build a clear leader is almost certainly the issue.
