Beginner success with Magnolia — here is what helped

As a complete beginner I was nervous about starting with Magnolia. It turned out to be more forgiving than I expected, as long as I paid attention to keeping a mulch-free collar immediately around the trunk.

I grow mine in a wildlife garden with native species which is working really well. significant impact on the microclimate and character of a garden was a genuine surprise — I didn't expect it to look or perform like that. full canopy providing shade and habitat in summer has been the highlight so far. My biggest mistake early on was ignoring scale insects or aphids in the canopy attracting sooty mould, which I'd recommend addressing immediately.
