I don't have a garden so a specimen on a lawn as a traditional statement tree is my only option for Silver Birch. It absolutely works — with the right attention to keeping a mulch-free collar immediately around the trunk you can get excellent results in containers.

canopy habitat for birds, insects, and wildlife is fully achievable even in a pot. blossom or leaf burst in spring creating dramatic transformation is just as impressive in a container as it would be in the ground, possibly more so because the plant is at closer viewing distance. The main issue to watch in containers: root encroachment near drains or house foundations. Happens faster than in the ground. Highly recommend for balcony and patio gardeners.
