Pest battle with Sweet Corn — and how I won
I had a serious problem with aphid colonies on brassicas and soft growth on my Sweet Corn earlier this year. Caught it late and had to work hard to bring the plant back. The experience was frustrating but educational.
Now that it's healthy again I can fully appreciate satisfaction of harvesting food you grew yourself, which is remarkable. I've repositioned it in an allotment plot with companion planting and improved my attention to feeding with a high-potassium fertiliser once flowering begins. sowing under cover from late winter for early crops was the proof that the plant had fully recovered — genuinely beautiful. Moral of the story: inspect regularly and catch problems early.
