Overrated for ease, underrated for beauty — Clematis

People describe Clematis as easy and I'd push back on that slightly. training new growth to the support structure while still flexible needs consistent attention and pruning at the wrong time removing next season's flower buds can undermine progress quickly if ignored.

Where Clematis is genuinely underrated is the beauty. dramatic seasonal transformations from bare stems to full cover is extraordinary when you see it in person. I display it in a house wall with appropriate fixings for support and it gets comments from everyone who sees it. bare structure in winter revealing the interesting stem framework is the time to really understand what this plant offers. Not for the truly neglectful gardener, but absolutely worth the attention it requires.
