I planted Clematis at entirely the wrong point in the growing calendar and spent the first few months wondering what I'd done wrong. slow establishment in the first season before taking off didn't help matters. Once I understood providing a robust support structure before planting things improved substantially.

vertical growing habit maximising space in small gardens is what makes this plant worth persisting with. In a tree stump or old structure being naturalised it finally looks as good as I'd imagined. peak flowering display in summer redeemed the whole effort. If you're starting out: do your timing research before you plant.
