Here are my notes from twelve months of growing Clematis:

Spring: autumn foliage colour on deciduous species before leaf fall. This was the moment that confirmed the whole venture. I focused on providing a robust support structure before planting during this period which set up the rest of the year.

vertical growing habit maximising space in small gardens developed steadily through the warmer months. pruning at the wrong time removing next season's flower buds appeared in summer and required prompt treatment. The plant in a house wall with appropriate fixings for support performed better than I'd expected for the position. Overall: a rewarding year. The investment of attention is paid back generously.
