Struggling with Virginia Creeper — would appreciate advice

I want to be honest: I'm not getting great results with Virginia Creeper and I'm not entirely sure why. pruning at the wrong time removing next season's flower buds has been a recurring problem despite my attempts to address it. I've been focusing on training new growth to the support structure while still flexible based on everything I've read.

vertical growing habit maximising space in small gardens is there in glimpses, which tells me the plant has potential in my conditions. I have it in a boundary wall or fence for screening and softening which might not be ideal. bare structure in winter revealing the interesting stem framework showed some improvement. Two stars for now — not the plant's fault, but not a success yet. I'll update if things improve.
