Honest review: Purple Coneflower is rewarding but annual weed competition overwhelming slow-establishing flowers is real
Purple Coneflower is a genuinely satisfying plant to grow, but I want to be upfront about one thing: annual weed competition overwhelming slow-establishing flowers. I've dealt with it twice now and it takes consistent attention to manage.
Beyond that, naturalistic aesthetic that suits modern ecological gardens makes it one of my favourites in the collection. I keep it in a container with a meadow mix for a balcony which suits it well. Learning about avoiding any fertiliser which would favour grasses over flowers has been essential. cutting back meadow areas in autumn to remove thatch is worth waiting for — the plant really justifies itself then. Four stars because of that persistent issue.
