I signed up for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expecting a straightforward fitness class. What I found was a technical discipline that demands real skill development. The guard passing I was shown in week one is still something I'm refining now, 14 months later. open mat gave me a framework for understanding why things work, not just what to do.

community at open mat was the surprise that hooked me. finding a reputable Gracie lineage gym was the reality check that made me respect the sport. The mouthguard is worth the investment — don't cut corners. I came for fitness and found a practice. That's a much better outcome.
