The British Shorthair is one of the oldest and most beloved cat breeds in the UK, descended from domestic cats brought to Britain by the Romans. Known for their round face, dense plush coat, and calm, easygoing temperament, British Shorthairs are the definition of a stable, uncomplicated companion. They are affectionate without being demanding, and content to be near you without being underfoot.

Pros

  • Calm, stable temperament — rarely reactive or anxious
  • Affectionate but not clingy — respects personal space
  • Dense, plush coat that is surprisingly easy to maintain
  • Good with children and other pets
  • Long lifespan — typically 14–20 years

Cons

  • Can become overweight without portion control
  • Not a lap cat — may prefer sitting beside you rather than on you
  • Less playful as they age — better suited to calmer households
  • Blue British Shorthairs are particularly popular but can be very expensive
