The Burmilla is an accidental creation from a 1981 cross between a Chinchilla Persian and a Burmese cat in the UK. Combining the best of both parent breeds, Burmillas are playful and sociable like Burmese but slightly calmer and more independent. Their distinctive silver-tipped coat and large green eyes make them strikingly beautiful cats with an equally attractive temperament.

Pros

  • Playful but not as demanding as pure Burmese
  • Sociable and affectionate with family
  • Strikingly beautiful silver coat
  • Good temperament with children and other pets

Cons

  • Coat needs regular grooming
  • Less independent than some cats
  • Relatively rare, limited breeder availability
  • Can be vocal when wanting attention

Striking and sociable

My Burmilla is the cat people always ask about. Her silver coat and green eyes are genuinely unusual and beautiful. She presents herself well and is sociable with visitors in a friendly, confident way that most cats are not. She is a wonderful representative of the breed and a pleasure to live with.…

Intelligent and engaging

My Burmilla figured out food puzzle toys faster than any cat I have owned. She is sharp and engaged and clearly enjoys mental stimulation. She invents her own games and has developed complex routines that she performs with obvious satisfaction. She is curious and interactive without the intensity of…

Perfect balance of Burmese and Persian

Having owned both Burmese and Persians, my Burmilla seems to have inherited the best of each. She has the Burmese sociability and playfulness without the intensity, and the Persian's calmer nature without the aloofness. She is the ideal middle ground between those two extremes. She is lovely to live…

She is affectionate enough to make the relationship rewarding and self-sufficient enough not to be stressful. She has shown me the best aspects of cat companionship. …

Quite vocal at times

My Burmilla is lovely but she is more vocal than I expected. She announces herself when entering rooms, comments on meals, and tells me clearly when her attention needs are not being met. She is not excessively demanding but she communicates assertively. I have come to enjoy the communication but it…

Great family cat

My Burmilla has settled beautifully into our busy family home. She plays with the children, seeks out adults for quieter contact, and has integrated with our older cat without drama. She is sociable and adaptable and finds her own level of engagement with each family member. She is affectionate with…
