The Cornish Rex is one of the most distinctive cats in the world, with its dramatically large ears, prominent cheekbones, and short, tightly waved coat caused by a mutation that first appeared in Cornwall, England in 1950. The Cornish Rex looks like something from another planet — and acts like it too. They are among the most active, acrobatic, and extroverted cats in existence, turning every room into a stage.

Pros

  • Truly unique appearance — unlike any other breed
  • Very low shedding — coat produces minimal loose hair
  • Extroverted and social — loves people and gets along with other pets
  • Remains playful and kitten-like throughout life
  • Often well-tolerated by allergy sufferers

Cons

  • Thin coat provides minimal insulation — sensitive to cold
  • Higher caloric needs due to elevated metabolism
  • Needs significant daily enrichment and play to stay settled
  • Ears require more frequent cleaning than most breeds

Great with other cats

The Cornish Rex's playful, high-energy personality works well in multi-cat households, particularly with other active breeds. Mine plays enthusiastically with our younger cat and has been a genuinely positive influence on the older, more sedentary cat who has become more active since her arrival. Th…

Requires more food than you expect

The higher metabolic rate that keeps them warm means Cornish Rex eat more than comparably-sized cats. Mine eats about 20% more than the packaging suggests. This isn't a problem, just something to budget for. Make sure you're feeding enough — an underweight Cornish Rex is more vulnerable to temperatu…

Life-changing choice of breed

My Cornish Rex is the reason I'm now a devoted cat person. I got her to see if I could manage a pet, expecting something low-maintenance and peripheral. Instead I got a demanding, wonderful companion who has reorganised my priorities. She needs attention and gives back tenfold. I've since added a se…

The most expressive face in the cat world

The Cornish Rex face is extraordinary — huge ears, prominent cheekbones, wide eyes. Every mood is written on it in bold. Satisfaction, curiosity, offence, delight — all completely readable. This expressiveness combined with the interactive personality makes communication with this cat remarkably cle…

The thin coat means temperature sensitivity

Cornish Rex get cold more easily than thickly-coated breeds. Mine moves away from draughts, sleeps pressed against radiators in winter, and shivers slightly in cold rooms if not provided with warm sleeping spots. Heated blankets and warm cat beds are non-negotiable purchases. If your home is consist…

Aerial acrobat of the cat world

My Cornish Rex treats horizontal surfaces as suggestions. She prefers vertical ones — the top of every bookcase, the highest kitchen cabinet, the curtain rail. She moves with incredible speed and precision. Watching her navigate the room at full speed is spectacular. She's never knocked anything ove…

Social to an almost dog-like degree

My Cornish Rex greets visitors, approaches strangers for attention, and seems to actively enjoy meeting new people. He has never hidden from anyone, never hissed at a stranger, and has been known to sit on the laps of guests who announced they don't like cats. His confidence and social ease is genui…

The most surprising cat I have ever owned

Nothing fully prepares you for a Cornish Rex. The wavy coat, the enormous ears, the alien face — it all looks like it shouldn't work, and then it absolutely does. My boy is the most engaging, affectionate, acrobatic cat I have ever encountered. He treats every day as an athletic performance and ever…

Perfect for allergy sufferers

My partner has mild cat allergies. The Cornish Rex was recommended because of their minimal shedding and reduced allergen levels. After two years together, my partner has had zero allergic reactions. The short wavy coat is essentially hypoallergenic in practice, at least for mild-to-moderate allergi…

Radiates heat like a small furnace

Cornish Rex run warmer than other cats — their thin coat provides less insulation so they lose body heat more readily and compensate by running slightly hotter. My girl loves pressing against warm things: laptops, radiators, sleeping humans. In winter she's an excellent hot water bottle. In summer s…
