My first cat — completely converted me
I was a dog person who was talked into getting an Exotic Shorthair by a friend. Six months later I am completely converted. She has a way of making herself comfortable wherever I am, and her quiet presence in the evenings is genuinely calming. Never a moment of aggression or destruction. Couldn't im…

The flat face causes some health concerns
I want to be honest: the brachycephalic face that makes these cats so cute also means they can have breathing difficulties in heat and sometimes tear staining that needs regular cleaning. My girl is generally healthy but I do spend more time on maintenance than I expected, particularly cleaning arou…

Absolute sweetheart with everyone
My Exotic Shorthair is the most universally popular pet I have ever owned. Delivery people, visiting children, wary adults who claim not to like cats — every single one has been won over by her. She approaches strangers confidently, lets them pet her, and chirps contentedly. Zero fear, zero aggressi…

Low maintenance coat, high maintenance attention
The coat is genuinely easy compared to Persians. But Exotic Shorthairs want company. They're not needy in an anxious way, more in a gentle persistent way — appearing next to you, sitting on your papers, touching your hand with a paw. If you work long hours, consider getting a companion for them.

Healthy line, good lifespan
We chose a reputable breeder specifically because of health concerns with flat-faced breeds. Five years in and our Exotic is in excellent health. She breathes normally, has no eye issues, and has only been to the vet for routine care. Choosing your breeder carefully really does matter with this bree…

Quieter than expected — not for interactive play lovers
My Exotic is genuinely a lounge cat. He's affectionate and sweet but he would rather be stroked than play. I tried various toys and he shows mild interest for a minute before returning to his cushion. If you want an active, engaging cat, this probably isn't your breed. For anyone who just wants a ca…

Perfect indoor companion
For apartment living, the Exotic Shorthair is unbeatable. Mine is calm, quiet, and completely content indoors. She doesn't need outdoor access or huge spaces — just comfortable spots to nap, a sunny window, and someone to cuddle with in the evenings. Never destructive, never demanding. A truly peace…

That face is irresistible
The flat face is the thing everyone notices first, and yes, it's as endearing in person as in photos. My Exotic looks perpetually surprised and slightly grumpy at the same time, which is completely at odds with his sweet, affectionate personality. He's gentle with everyone and seems to genuinely enj…

Surprisingly playful despite the calm reputation
People assume Exotic Shorthairs just sleep all day. Mine certainly does sleep a lot but he has daily bursts of genuine playfulness — chasing toys, batting at strings, doing little leaps that look improbable given his stocky build. He's not high-energy but he's not a couch potato either. Nice balance…

All the Persian charm, half the grooming
I wanted a Persian but couldn't commit to daily brushing. The Exotic Shorthair was the perfect compromise. Same sweet, gentle face, same calm personality, but a short plush coat that needs brushing just once or twice a week. My boy is serene, cuddly, and makes the funniest faces. Absolutely love thi…
