The Maine Coon is the largest domestic cat breed, and one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. With their tufted ears, bushy tails, and thick double coats, Maine Coons are built for the cold winters of New England. But it's their personality — dog-like in sociability and playfulness, yet independently feline — that has made them consistently one of the most popular breeds worldwide.

Pros

  • Dog-like personality: follows owners, comes when called, loves interaction
  • Gentle giant — exceptionally good with children and other pets
  • Playful and kitten-like energy that persists into adulthood
  • Robust constitution and generally good health
  • Distinctive, beautiful appearance with a wide range of colours and patterns

Cons

  • Dense coat requires brushing 2–3 times per week to prevent matting
  • Large size means larger food bills and bigger litter boxes
  • Heavy shedding, particularly in spring
  • Can be prone to hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) — health testing recommended

The breed is not for everyone. Please don’t throw stones at me, anything can happen. And I came to the conclusion that ordinary mongrel cats are the best. And it is better to have this breed not with small children, and not with allergies.
