The Manx is a naturally tailless (or short-tailed) cat breed originating on the Isle of Man, where the mutation became fixed in the island's isolated cat population. Beyond the distinctive taillessness, Manx cats are known for their rounded, compact body and a personality that is often described as dog-like — they fetch, follow their owners, and form unusually strong bonds with their people. They are loyal, playful, and enduringly charming.

Pros

  • Dog-like loyalty and personality — some learn to fetch
  • Calm, stable, and highly adaptable temperament
  • Good with children and other pets
  • Available in varying tail lengths: rumpy, stumpy, and tailed
  • Generally healthy when sourced from responsible breeders

Cons

  • Manx syndrome: tailless genetics can cause serious spinal defects in some lines
  • Health testing by breeders is essential — avoid buying from untested lines
  • Compact build can lead to weight gain — portion control important
  • May be reluctant to jump to great heights due to body structure

One of the great undiscovered breeds

Manx aren't as fashionable as Bengals or Maine Coons but they should be. The combination of dog-like loyalty, hunting instinct, intelligence, and complete stable temperament makes them exceptional companions. Mine has been the best cat I've owned in twenty years of keeping cats. I'll always have a M…

Manx syndrome is a real health concern

Tailless Manx (Rumpies) can have spinal issues related to the tail mutation — this is called Manx syndrome. Responsible breeders test for this and avoid pairing rumpies. My girl is a stumpy (partial tail) and perfectly healthy, but prospective owners should research carefully and only buy from breed…

Completely settled and uncomplicated

In five years my Manx has been the most uncomplicated cat I've owned. No anxiety, no bad behaviour, no health drama. She eats well, uses her litter box perfectly, plays appropriately, and spends evenings contentedly in our company. The stable, predictable temperament is a genuine pleasure after owni…

Playful and intelligent

Don't let the round, sedentary appearance fool you. Manx cats are proper athletes who love to play. Mine has a rotation of favourite toys and expects interactive play sessions every day. She's also bright — she figured out how to open lever door handles and has been known to watch me closely before …

Adapts well to indoor life

My Manx is completely content as an indoor cat. She doesn't pace at windows with frustrated hunting energy or try to escape. She's calm and settled indoors as long as she gets sufficient play and engagement. For urban cat owners who can't provide outdoor access, this adaptability is genuinely valuab…

The round build can lead to weight issues

Manx cats have a naturally compact, round build but this can tip into overweight if diet isn't carefully managed. Mine gained weight in middle age until we adjusted her portions. Regular weighing and portion control have kept her at a healthy weight for two years now. Not a difficult management issu…

The tailless wonder — completely distinctive

People do a double-take when they see my Manx for the first time. The round body, the completely tail-free silhouette — she looks like a different species. But once the novelty passes, what you have is an affectionate, dog-like cat with a wonderful personality. The missing tail is just the first sur…

The most dog-like cat I have ever owned

My Manx fetches. He actually retrieves thrown toys and brings them back. He follows me from room to room, sits and waits at the door when I leave, and greets me when I return. He walks on a leash in the garden. Every visitor says the same thing: he behaves like a small, polite dog. It's one of the m…

Incredibly loyal and attached

Manx cats bond intensely with their family and mine is no exception. He's not anxious about the bond — just genuinely devoted. He chooses to be near me, checks on me if I'm unwell, and seems aware of my emotional state in a way that feels remarkable. The loyalty of this breed is something you have t…

Excellent mousers and hunters by instinct

The Manx was developed on the Isle of Man partly for its hunting abilities and that instinct is still present. Mine plays with laser pointers and toy mice with predatory focus that's genuinely impressive. If we had outdoor access she'd be a formidable hunter. Indoor hunting through play keeps her ha…
