The Norwegian Forest Cat — known in Norway as Skogkatt — is a large, semi-wild-looking breed that has lived in Scandinavian forests for centuries. Built for harsh climates with a thick water-repellent double coat, tufted ears, and large, tufted paws, the Wegie is as hardy as it looks. Despite the rugged exterior, they are affectionate, calm, and good-natured — the ideal companion for those who appreciate a more independent feline.

Pros

  • Hardy and exceptionally healthy — natural rather than selectively bred to extremes
  • Calm and stable temperament — excellent with families
  • Semi-long coat is less prone to matting than Persian or Ragdoll
  • Good with children and other pets
  • Adaptable and confident in new situations

Cons

  • Dense coat sheds heavily, especially twice a year
  • More independent than some breeds — may not seek constant affection
  • Needs vertical space (cat trees, shelves) to feel content
  • Large size requires more food and larger facilities than average cats

Surprisingly playful well into adulthood

At five years old my NFC still acts like a kitten. Every morning she does laps around the apartment and by evening she's ready for a gentle chin scratch. She gets along brilliantly with our other cat and has never once been aggressive. The grooming is manageable — I brush her twice a week and we've …

Rugged and sweet in equal measure

There's something wonderfully no-nonsense about this breed. My boy Thor eats the same food every day without complaint, sleeps wherever he wants (usually somewhere inconvenient), and greets us at the door every evening. He's not overly demanding but he notices when you're gone too long. Shedding in …

Excellent with children, surprisingly gentle

I read these cats can be aloof and was ready to work for affection. What I got instead was a gentle giant who lets my toddler drag him around (gently!) without protest. He's not a pushover — he'll walk away when he's had enough — but his default is sweet and tolerant. Very healthy breed, robust cons…

Worth it if you can handle the fur

Honestly the shedding is on another level, especially twice a year when they blow their undercoat. I spend serious time on grooming and still find cat hair in my coffee. But the personality makes up for it — calm, stable, never neurotic. Great for people who want a cat that feels like a solid, depen…

Fell in love immediately, no regrets

I fostered a Norwegian Forest Cat kitten 'just for a few weeks' and she never left. Three years on and she is the best decision I never made intentionally. Smart, healthy, playful but never annoying. She learned to open lever door handles in the second week. I now have lever handles throughout the h…

Built for cold winters, thrives in any home

Growing up in Scandinavia I always wanted a Norwegian Forest Cat, and my girl Freya has not disappointed. She's incredibly sturdy and healthy — barely a vet visit in four years. Her double coat sheds heavily in spring but otherwise is surprisingly low maintenance. She's gentle with our kids and tole…

Stunning breed with a wild side

These cats carry that semi-wild look and they absolutely have the personality to match. Mine loves to climb, hunt toy mice with terrifying focus, and occasionally yowl at birds through the window for 20 minutes straight. Not a cuddly breed, but deeply loyal to the people they choose. Worth every bit…

Great family cat, independent thinker

We got Ingrid when our kids were 6 and 8. She's been brilliant — patient, never scratchy, and she'll play fetch with a crinkle ball for ages. She does things on her own timeline though. If she wants to be left alone, she'll let you know. Once she trusts you she's incredibly affectionate in her own q…

Beautiful but very independent

I wanted a cuddly cat and instead got a majestic observer. My Norwegian Forest Cat watches everything from high shelves but rarely comes to sit with me. He's healthy, eats well, and is never destructive — just not what I expected in terms of affection. If you want a lap cat, look elsewhere. If you w…

The perfect apartment companion

I was worried a Norwegian Forest Cat would be too energetic for my apartment, but Bjorn has been absolutely perfect. He loves to perch on high spots and watch the world go by. His coat is gorgeous but does require brushing a few times a week. Definitely not a lap cat in the traditional sense — more …
