Weekend in Beijing, China — more than I expected from a short trip
Only had a long weekend — about 13 days — in China, based in Beijing. More than enough to fall for the place. Did Terracotta Army on day one and spent the rest of the time just walking and eating. The mapo tofu situation here is no joke — some of the best eating I've done anywhere.

Backpacking through China on a tight budget — totally doable
Did China on a shoestring for 6 days and it was absolutely manageable. Based in cheap guesthouses near Beijing centre and ate mostly at local spots — dim sum from street stalls cost almost nothing and was better than anything in a tourist restaurant.

Good country, exhausting tourist industry
China is a genuinely beautiful and interesting place. Terracotta Army is worth every superlative thrown at it. The dim sum is legitimately excellent. extraordinary ancient history gave the trip real depth.

I came to China specifically for photography and the country delivered material at every turn. West Lake at dawn was everything I'd hoped. Beijing's streets at dusk are an endless source of light and texture. The people, once comfortable with a camera, are extraordinary subjects.

Xi'an surprised me completely on this trip to China
