Varadero Beach in Cuba is extraordinary — the scale and history hit you immediately. But the experience around it has been thoroughly commercialised. Getting there, navigating the crowds, and dealing with persistent sellers around Trinidad centre made it more stressful than it should be.

Photography trip to Cuba — every frame a gift
I came to Cuba specifically for photography and the country delivered material at every turn. Old Havana at dawn was everything I'd hoped. Santiago de Cuba's streets at dusk are an endless source of light and texture. The people, once comfortable with a camera, are extraordinary subjects.

Three weeks in Cuba — here is what I actually think
Three weeks is long enough to get past the tourist surface in Cuba. The first week I was in Viñales and the big sites like Che Guevara Mausoleum. The second and third I went further and slower. The food evolution was interesting — lechón asado everywhere but prepared so differently by region.

Arrived with low expectations, left completely converted
Cuba wasn't high on my travel list. A friend pushed me to go and I'm genuinely grateful. The first full day in Cienfuegos reset everything — the scale of Che Guevara Mausoleum and the quality of the lechón asado were immediate signals that I'd misjudged the place completely.
