Arrived with low expectations, left completely converted
Japan wasn't high on my travel list. A friend pushed me to go and I'm genuinely grateful. The first full day in Kyoto reset everything — the scale of Fushimi Inari Shrine and the quality of the ramen were immediate signals that I'd misjudged the place completely.

What nobody tells you about visiting Japan
After a lot of research I thought I knew what to expect from Japan. Some things matched: Mt. Fuji is as spectacular as every review says, and Hiroshima has a genuine energy I'd read about. The sushi obsession is completely justified.
What I wasn't prepared for: extraordinary cleanliness and order. …

The people of Japan are the real highlight
I've been to a lot of countries and the thing I'll remember most about Japan isn't Mt. Fuji or even the extraordinary matcha everything — it's the people. In Kyoto and out in the countryside, I encountered a warmth and generosity that felt completely genuine.
One local family essentially adopted me…

Returned to Japan for the third time — keeps getting better
This was my third visit to Japan and I keep finding new reasons to return. This time I explored beyond Hiroshima and discovered a completely different side of the country. Shibuya Crossing never loses its impact no matter how many times you've seen it.
The food still makes me happy in ways I can't …

Nara surprised me completely on this trip to Japan
I went to Japan with modest expectations and left completely won over, largely thanks to time spent in Nara. The city has a pace and character that travel guides undersell. Found a great spot for matcha everything on day two and went back every day after that.
Fushimi Inari Shrine was the big plann…

Honest thoughts on Japan after my first visit
First time in Japan and I tried to approach it with open eyes rather than preconceptions. Tokyo was the base and a good one — central, manageable, and with strong food options including the best matcha everything I've ever had. Hiroshima Peace Memorial was the big set piece and fully justified the t…

Arashiyama Bamboo Grove alone makes Japan worth the trip
I'll be honest — I went to Japan primarily to see Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, and it delivered beyond what any photo prepares you for. But the surrounding region surprised me just as much. Tokyo has a character I didn't anticipate, and wandering without a plan for an afternoon turned out to be one of t…

Mixed experience in Japan — beautiful but overhyped
Japan is undeniably beautiful. Hiroshima Peace Memorial and the area around Osaka have a visual quality that photographs don't capture fully. I enjoyed matcha everything and appreciated unique blend of ancient and ultra-modern. That's all real.
But very expensive was more of a problem than I expect…
