What nobody tells you about visiting Peru
After a lot of research I thought I knew what to expect from Peru. Some things matched: Sacred Valley is as spectacular as every review says, and Iquitos has a genuine energy I'd read about. The causa obsession is completely justified.
What I wasn't prepared for: Machu Picchu lives up to its reputa…

Mixed experience in Peru — beautiful but overhyped
Peru is undeniably beautiful. Machu Picchu and the area around Arequipa have a visual quality that photographs don't capture fully. I enjoyed causa and appreciated Machu Picchu lives up to its reputation. That's all real.
But altitude sickness in Cusco hits hard was more of a problem than I expecte…

The food in Peru changed how I think about travel
I travel for food more than anything else, and Peru shot straight to the top of my culinary travel list. causa alone justified the flight, but that was just the beginning. The variety and quality in Huaraz is relentless — I didn't have a single disappointing meal in 10 days.
Sacred Valley gave cont…

Machu Picchu alone makes Peru worth the trip
I'll be honest — I went to Peru primarily to see Machu Picchu, and it delivered beyond what any photo prepares you for. But the surrounding region surprised me just as much. Cusco has a character I didn't anticipate, and wandering without a plan for an afternoon turned out to be one of the highlight…

One local family essentially adopted me for an …

Arrived with low expectations, left completely converted
Peru wasn't high on my travel list. A friend pushed me to go and I'm genuinely grateful. The first full day in Iquitos reset everything — the scale of Lake Titicaca and the quality of the causa were immediate signals that I'd misjudged the place completely.
one of the world's great food cities in L…

Backpacking through Peru on a tight budget — totally doable
Did Peru on a shoestring for 7 days and it was absolutely manageable. Based in cheap guesthouses near Iquitos centre and ate mostly at local spots — causa from street stalls cost almost nothing and was better than anything in a tourist restaurant.
Machu Picchu has an entry fee but worth every penny…

Solo trip to Peru: everything you need to know
Did 5 days solo in Peru and found it extremely manageable as a solo traveller. The transport network around Arequipa is decent and getting to Colca Canyon independently was straightforward. Met fellow travellers easily and locals were generally happy to chat.

Disappointed by the tourist experience around Sacred Valley
Sacred Valley in Peru is extraordinary — the scale and history hit you immediately. But the experience around it has been thoroughly commercialised. Getting there, navigating the crowds, and dealing with persistent sellers around Huaraz centre made it more stressful than it should be.
Away from the…
