Honest thoughts on Serbia after my first visit
First time in Serbia and I tried to approach it with open eyes rather than preconceptions. Subotica was the base and a good one — central, manageable, and with strong food options including the best sarma I've ever had. Đavolja Varoš was the big set piece and fully justified the trip.
Two things wo…

Belgrade Fortress alone makes Serbia worth the trip
I'll be honest — I went to Serbia primarily to see Belgrade Fortress, and it delivered beyond what any photo prepares you for. But the surrounding region surprised me just as much. Belgrade has a character I didn't anticipate, and wandering without a plan for an afternoon turned out to be one of the…

Mixed experience in Serbia — beautiful but overhyped
Serbia is undeniably beautiful. Gamzigrad-Romuliana and the area around Subotica have a visual quality that photographs don't capture fully. I enjoyed gibanica pastry and appreciated genuinely warm Balkan hospitality. That's all real.
But Belgrade rough around the edges was more of a problem than I…

Disappointed by the tourist experience around Gamzigrad-Romuliana
Gamzigrad-Romuliana in Serbia is extraordinary — the scale and history hit you immediately. But the experience around it has been thoroughly commercialised. Getting there, navigating the crowds, and dealing with persistent sellers around Niš centre made it more stressful than it should be.

Backpacking through Serbia on a tight budget — totally doable
Did Serbia on a shoestring for 7 days and it was absolutely manageable. Based in cheap guesthouses near Novi Sad centre and ate mostly at local spots — rakija from street stalls cost almost nothing and was better than anything in a tourist restaurant.
Belgrade Fortress has an entry fee but worth ev…

Family holiday in Serbia — kids loved it, parents survived
Took the family to Serbia for 13 days and it worked better than I'd hoped. The kids were fascinated by Petrovaradin Fortress — more than I expected from children who usually resist sightseeing. Food was manageable: even the pickiest eater in our group found things to eat, and ćevapi went down well w…

Solo trip to Serbia: everything you need to know
Did 9 days solo in Serbia and found it extremely manageable as a solo traveller. The transport network around Subotica is decent and getting to Studenica Monastery independently was straightforward. Met fellow travellers easily and locals were generally happy to chat.

Weekend in Belgrade, Serbia — more than I expected from a short trip
Only had a long weekend — about 19 days — in Serbia, based in Belgrade. More than enough to fall for the place. Did Gamzigrad-Romuliana on day one and spent the rest of the time just walking and eating. The sarma situation here is no joke — some of the best eating I've done anywhere.

The people of Serbia are the real highlight
I've been to a lot of countries and the thing I'll remember most about Serbia isn't Petrovaradin Fortress or even the extraordinary pljeskavica — it's the people. In Belgrade and out in the countryside, I encountered a warmth and generosity that felt completely genuine.
One local family essentially…

Unexpected emotional depth in Serbia
I thought I was going to Serbia for beaches, food, and Đavolja Varoš. I got all of those things. What I didn't expect was how emotionally affecting the trip would be. The history — particularly around Belgrade — hit in ways that good travel sometimes does.
excellent and affordable food was the mome…
