The food in Switzerland changed how I think about travel
I travel for food more than anything else, and Switzerland shot straight to the top of my culinary travel list. fondue alone justified the flight, but that was just the beginning. The variety and quality in Lucerne is relentless — I didn't have a single disappointing meal in 15 days.

The people of Switzerland are the real highlight
I've been to a lot of countries and the thing I'll remember most about Switzerland isn't Château de Chillon or even the extraordinary Zürcher Geschnetzeltes — it's the people. In Geneva and out in the countryside, I encountered a warmth and generosity that felt completely genuine.

Switzerland in shoulder season — best decision I made
Visited Switzerland in shoulder season deliberately and the decision paid off completely. Matterhorn without peak crowds is a totally different experience. Geneva felt lived-in rather than touristy. Found a small place doing the best fondue I've ever tasted — something that would have been invisible…

Photography trip to Switzerland — every frame a gift
I came to Switzerland specifically for photography and the country delivered material at every turn. Jungfraujoch at dawn was everything I'd hoped. Zürich's streets at dusk are an endless source of light and texture. The people, once comfortable with a camera, are extraordinary subjects.

Disappointed by the tourist experience around Matterhorn
Matterhorn in Switzerland is extraordinary — the scale and history hit you immediately. But the experience around it has been thoroughly commercialised. Getting there, navigating the crowds, and dealing with persistent sellers around Interlaken centre made it more stressful than it should be.

Three weeks in Switzerland — here is what I actually think
Three weeks is long enough to get past the tourist surface in Switzerland. The first week I was in Geneva and the big sites like Château de Chillon. The second and third I went further and slower. The food evolution was interesting — rösti everywhere but prepared so differently by region.

Returned to Switzerland for the third time — keeps getting better
This was my third visit to Switzerland and I keep finding new reasons to return. This time I explored beyond Lucerne and discovered a completely different side of the country. Rhine Falls never loses its impact no matter how many times you've seen it.
The food still makes me happy in ways I can't f…

Would not rush back to Switzerland — eating out drains the budget fast was a real issue
I wanted to love Switzerland more than I did. The positives exist: Lake Geneva is genuinely impressive, Bern has moments of real charm, and rösti is as good as people say.
But eating out drains the budget fast was a persistent problem throughout the trip and dragged the experience down. I've heard …

Good country, exhausting tourist industry
Switzerland is a genuinely beautiful and interesting place. Matterhorn is worth every superlative thrown at it. The raclette is legitimately excellent. world-class skiing gave the trip real depth.
What I struggled with: the tourist infrastructure around the headline sites in Bern is relentlessly co…

Honest thoughts on Switzerland after my first visit
First time in Switzerland and I tried to approach it with open eyes rather than preconceptions. Zürich was the base and a good one — central, manageable, and with strong food options including the best fondue I've ever had. Rhine Falls was the big set piece and fully justified the trip.
