Die Hard (1988)

Everyone focuses on the lead in Die Hard but the supporting cast is extraordinary. Every scene partner brings something real. It makes the world feel fully inhabited rather than staged.

I liked Die Hard when I first saw it, but the second viewing is where it clicked. Once you notice how John McTiernan plants every detail early on, the whole film transforms. Layers everywhere.

Die Hard is not background viewing. Every scene requires you. Put your phone down, dim the lights. John McTiernan is doing too much to be half-watched. Give it the attention it deserves.

I first watched Die Hard as a teenager and thought it was fine. Rewatched at 30 and it hit completely differently. The Christmas in a hostile world undercurrent makes total sense now in a way it didn't before.

Die Hard deals with wits vs force in a way that's genuinely uncomfortable at times. But that discomfort is the point. John McTiernan never lets you look away, and the film is better for it.
