Hard to watch but impossible to look away

Good Will Hunting deals with healing through vulnerability in a way that's genuinely uncomfortable at times. But that discomfort is the point. Gus Van Sant never lets you look away, and the film is better for it.

Dated in some ways but still powerful

Some elements of Good Will Hunting show their age, but the core of it — the fear of being seen, Robin Williams and Matt Damon's chemistry — hasn't diminished at all. Films this good age better than almost anything else.

Disappointed given the reputation

Good Will Hunting is technically accomplished and I understand its place in film history. But it left me cold. The the fear of being seen element felt mechanical and I never connected emotionally. Maybe I'll try again someday.

Stayed with me for weeks

Good Will Hunting ended and I sat with it for weeks. The the fear of being seen theme kept circling back. I'd be doing something mundane and the final gone-to-see-about-a-girl would pop into my head. That kind of resonance is rare.
